Born 1888; Died 25/11/1918; Buried 26/11/1918; Age 40.

“Mr. Alfred William Young, superintendent in New Zealand for the Atlas Assurance Company, and one of the best known of the younger underwriters in Wellington, contracted influenza a fortnight ago while on a business visit to the country. A week later bronchial-pneumonia set in, and last evening he had a sharp heart seizure, and he passed away peacefully at 6 o’clock at his residence in Wellington Terrace. Mr Young, who was forty years of age, was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs William Young, of Camberwell, Victoria, and came to New Zealand sixteen years ago as inspector for the Royal Insurance Company. Later he became manager in Dunedin for the Commercial Union Assurance Company, and about seven years ago was offered and accepted the position of New Zealand superintendent for the Atlas Assurance Company Ltd., with headquarters at Wellington. During his residence in Wellington he occupied the position of president of the New Zealand Underwriters’ Association for two years, and was one of the association’s vice-presidents at the time of his death. He leaves a widow (Muriel, the daughter of Mr C. H. Howorth, late engineer for the Wanganui Harbour Board, and an artist of repute), and two little girls. He was of a bright, genial disposition, popular with everyone, and an excellent business man, and his death will be deplored by a very wide circle of business and personal friends”.
